![]() Dive into the history of New Zealand for a weekend. It is 250 years since Captain James Cook's historic visit to Mercury Bay/Te Whanganui-o-Hei. Tuia - Encounters 250 is the nationwide commemoration of Cook's visit to Aotearoa/New Zealand. And its's all happening on the weekend of 18-20 October here at Mercury Bay. There will be a flotilla made from six vessels to arrive in Mercury Bay early on Friday morning 18 October, the replica of HMB Endeveaour, two wake houruaa va'a moana from Tahiti, heritage ship R. Tucker Thompson and youth ship Spirit of New Zealand to attend a Te Pōwhiri at Wharekaho/Simpsons Beach. The Te Pōwhiri will start at 1pm and is expected to finish by 4.30pm. There is a free shuttle bus from Buffalo Beach to Wharekaho. 12 hours showcase of performing arts by local artists, including poetry, storytelling, music, dance and kappa haka on Saturday 19 October from 10am to 10pm at Whakau Reserve/Taylor's Mistake in Whitianga.
